The big climactic page! All of the text is from the original Hans Christian Andersen story.

Getting the perfect pose for Lucas on the third panel was very difficult, as I wanted to show his despair without being too OTT about it, and still making him dancing beautifully. Also, in the crowd panels, I snuck in my top five favorite members of AKB48, as well as a couple of other members, so I hope you can find them! My mother and brother are very fond of the bald guy xD

Page Seventeen
This is actually one of the first pages I did, as my teacher wanted us to do some of the major pages early on. The only changes I ended making for the final version was adding the skin flaps and cuts on the legs, and a redone last panel. I’m really fond of that foot xD

Page Fifteen Page Sixteen
Lady Sooyeon is based off of Jessica Jung from Girls’ Generation, as I wanted to do a Korean princess and Sica is my favorite female K-Pop idol. For a couple of weeks in December, I was going to drop The Little Mermaid as the topic of my thesis, and start over doing Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. Sica was my basis for Ruth, so this is kind of a reference to that as well. Also, in the crowd scene in the first panel of the last row, I snuck in some humanoid forms of My Little Pony:FiM characters, so look for them xD

The palace is based off of Shuri Castle in Okinawa, as I wanted a distinctly Okinawan feel for my earth world. There are also the dragon boats from pages four and five, and the East-meets-West feel of the prince’s informal clothes. The logo on his shirt is for Shiina Ringo, since she is one of my favorite musical artists.

I apologize for how poorly drawn that penis is. I used Wikipedia as reference xD

Page Twelve Page Thirteen Page Fourteen
The original version of this page was done in October, but I ended up redoing it a week before thesis was due. Looking at the two pages next to each other, my growth is really obvious, as the drawing and the gore is better here. The original was really timid, but since this is such a crucial page, I really needed to pump up the gruesomeness. Since I was too grossed out to look at actual flesh being torn, I found gifs from horror movies xD

The first appearance of my Sea Witch! I based her off of Kate Bush, since I felt she has that perfect look for a spooky, beautiful witch. She is also part clam, because I thought that with the lack of mobility and the pearls, it was equal parts lethargic and glamorous, which I was going for with this character. All of her dialogue in her first panel is from the original text.

Page Nine Page Ten+Eleven Page Twelve
Pages ten and eleven were done as one, and printed as a spread in the middle of the book. The song Lucas is singing is “Unravel” by Björk, as I felt the romantic yet creepy lyrics fit his feelings, and because it’s one of my favorite songs. Jellyfish are one of my favorite sea creatures, so I had to find a place for one in this comic, so here it is!
lea-lemon asked: Hello<3 ! I love this so much, it's so colorful! Can I ask you what do you use to do the colors? Thank you~! (I'm sorry if it has already been said somewhere)
Hi! Thank you so much! I use watercolors to paint my comic. In particular, I use Windsor and Netwon Cotman pans. My ink is also Windsor and Netwon! :)
